Georgia Northwestern To Offer Additional Course In Certified Logistics Training

Due to popular demand, Georgia Northwestern Technical College (GNTC) is offering an additional course in its Certified Logistics Technician training program. The course provides students with the opportunity to earn nationally recognized certification in an industry that offers very stable employment and continues to expand throughout northwest Georgia and beyond.

An information meeting will be held at GNTC’s Gordon County Campus on Thursday, Dec. 5, from 5:30-8 p.m. in Room 4122 C. The meeting will provide details about the course content, meeting times and dates, program cost, and logistics career information.

“Logistics distribution, trucking, shipping, and receiving is now seen as a real opportunity to add profit to the bottom line,” said Nick Sainato, instructor for the program and owner of M & S Logistics, Inc. in Calhoun. “There’s going to be a great need for a lot more people trained in shipping and receiving in the future.”

Logisticians analyze and coordinate an organization’s supply chain and are responsible for shipping and receiving items to and from specific sites – whether it’s to the other side of the warehouse, across the country, or to another part of the world. They manage the entire life cycle of a product, which includes how a product is acquired, distributed, allocated, and delivered.

“I’ve always been in the shipping and receiving portion of logistics, but I still learned a lot because there were things that I didn’t have to deal with before and it was a lot of information,” said Linda Hudson, shipping and receiving coordinator for M & S logistics.

Hudson said that the course at GNTC helped advance her career by exposing her to all aspects of logistics and providing industry certification.

“Even though I’ve been in the shipping and receiving portion for 20 years, I thought ‘well maybe if I have a certificate it would give me a better chance of finding a new job’ and it did,” said Hudson.

GNTC offers the Certified Logistics Technician program as a certified training and assessment provider contracted with the Manufacturing Skills Standard Council (MSSC), an industry-led, training, assessment, and certification system focused on the core skills and knowledge needed by front-line production and material handling workers.

Individuals who are unemployed due to downsizing or closings may be eligible for a Workforce Investment Act (WIA) sponsorship to cover the cost of the course. To see if you qualify for these benefits, contact GNTC’s WIA office at 706/295-6840.

Forklift operator certification and employability skills instruction is also included in the training program. For more information contact GNTC’s Office of Economic Development at 706/295-6961 or 706/272-2980.
